The miserable and lazy farmer Nils-Erik likes it that his wife Matilda rules and dictates, but cannot come to terms with the fact that she constantly falls for the flattery of their neighbor Valdemar. Two brothers, Sten and Jonas, own and live on a farm near Ätran in Falkenberg. Sten has just been released from prison but continues his shady business dealings, which now include a large stock of fine cognac. Jonas tries to put a stop to this but has to agree to play Sten's wife for a day in order to trick the person who is going to buy the smuggled alcohol. It turns out that Jonas has invited two summer guests to rent the chicken coop for a week, the young woman Anna and her father Göte .
