A very impoverished man wanders the cold and hostile city looking for cigarette butts. After being humiliated by rude people at a bar, he comes back to an isolated hut where he lives with a lazy man who refuses to abandon the place, which is more a lair for savage animals than a shelter for human beings.

In 1841, young Ishmael signs up for service aboard the Pequod, a whaler sailing out of New Bedford. The ship is under the command of Captain Ahab, a strict disciplinarian who exhorts his men to find Moby Dick, the great white whale. Ahab lost his leg to that creature and is desperate for revenge. As the crew soon learns, he will stop at nothing to gain satisfaction.

A fisherman living with his wife peacefully finds some ancient statues whilst diving, and he contacts his old partner, a small time crook in order to smuggle it. His friend visits him at home with his girlfriend and problems begin.
